Hosp. Equip. $ 6,281.52
Dues/meals $ 783.55
$ 7,197.68 Balance on hand
A more complete report including projections to end of year accompanies these Minutes. Note that a gift of $5,000.00 from Donnie Atteberry helped the club’s finances tremendously.
Arcola Senior Scholarship: Lion Ken Reveal, as head of the Scholarship Committee for the Arcola Lions Club, made a motion to award a $500.00 scholarship to a graduating senior from Arcola High School. The motion was seconded and carried. There will be a virtual ceremony at which the school will make the presentation in May to a recipient already chosen by the club Scholarship Committee.
Fundraising: Lion Tom Sherman reported applying for two grants of which one was turned down, and the other remains in limbo.
Membership changes: Two requests for membership changes have been received from Lion President Bill Murphy and Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy who will be moving to Gallatin, Tennessee to be closer to family. The original request was to become Associate Members of the Arcola Lions Club, but the International Bylaws are unclear on qualifications. The Lion Secretary will contact District Secretary Brad Cash for advice.
Sight & Sound Sweepstakes: The Lion Secretary presented ticket booklets for the annual Sight & Sound Sweepstakes sponsored by the Lions of Illinois Foundation. Members may purchase booklets after the meeting.
Election of Officers: Having not met since October, the Arcola Club is behind schedule in forming a slate of officers for 2021-22. Since District 1-M guidelines do not allow time for the normal three readings of the slate with the vote taking place at the third meeting and getting the required PU-101 form submitted in time, it was recommended by the Lion Secretary to set aside the bylaws requiring the three readings. A motion was made to follow through by Lion Jerry Stout which was seconded and carried. Subsequently, discussion took place to form a slate of officers which culminated in the following:
Immediate Past President Lion Billy Joe Murphy
President Lion Jerry Stout
1st Vice President Lion Barbara Edwards
Secretary Lion Don Winch
Treasurer Lion Tom Sherman
Lion Tamer Lion Dean Cole
Tail Twister Lion Tom Sherman
1 Year Director Lion Stephen Edwards
2 Year Directors Lions Marvelle Cole & Ken Reveal
Membership Chairman Lion Doug Beachy
A motion was made by Lion Dianne Murphy to approve the slate. The motion was seconded and the slate was approved unanimously.
Storage shed concerns: There are several issues concerning the Lions storage shed on Front St.: #1) Space is of primary concern. There is a lot of clutter that needs to be eliminated. #2) Adequate lighting is a problem. #3) New weatherstrip needs to be put on the bottom of the overhead door. #4) There is no heat in the building making repair work, etc. impossible in the cooler months of the year. Lion Dean Cole reported receipt of a wheelchair lift, and a use for it has already been declared for a resident in Tuscola. Volunteers will meet on April 13 @ approx. 12:30 to deliver it. Also, several beds have been returned which further complicates the space problem.
Installation Meeting: The traditional Officer Installation meeting was discussed, and it was set for Monday, June 28 @ 6:30 at the Arcola Presbyterian Church. The Lion Secretary will contact DG Bill Wallpe to see if he might be available and willing to come and speak and do the installation service for new officers for 2021-22. No meal is planned.
Correspondence: Lion President Bill Murphy read several pieces of correspondence received over the past six months. One was a letter from Global Membership Director Mark Krutsinger issuing a challenge for the club to try for at least 4 new members by June 30. Another was a note of thanks from Jeanne Lambeth for the use of a hospital bed along with a monetary donation. The Williams family thanked the club for the use of a hospital bed. One Stop Community Christmas thanked the club for its donation, and a Christmas card was received from Camp New Hope. A letter was received from Lindenmeyer Insurance describing its restructuring of the business, and Lion Secretary Don shared a note from the Lions of Illinois Foundation notifying about its new home in DeKalb, IL with the following new address: Lions of Illinois Foundation, 700 Peace Road, Suite B, DeKalb, IL 60115
The Foundation is also no longer accepting Christmas lights in its recycling containers.
Awards: The Lion Secretary presented Lions Dean Cole, Marvelle Cole, and Dianne Murphy with 100 Year Centennial pins for their sponsorship of new members. Lion President Bill Murphy was also awarded a Key Award for opening the door of Lionism to at least two individuals. Congratulations to all.

10 Lions members were in attendance at this meeting along with 1 guest, Mr. Wally Smith, representing the Boy Scouts of Arcola.
Guest Speaker: Wally Smith was introduced by Lion President Bill Murphy as guest speaker for the evening. Wally reviewed the activities of the Arcola Scouting program for the past year during the Covid 19 pandemic. While there was no actual scout camp in 2020 there were 2 weeks of virtual camp and 1 day of outdoor skill activities. At this point, there are plans to have 3 weeks of scout camp and a week of virtual camp in 2021. Cub and Webelo camps will be open this summer (2021). Both the Pack and Troop charters were renewed on January 1, 2021. With Daniel Upton aging out and registering as an Assistant Scoutmaster, at this point there are 5 members in the troop. Plan is to regroup on the issue of recruiting. As for the Pack, 3 members will be in their first year of Webelos, one in their 2nd year of Webelos, and 1 will be elevated to Bear rank once complete achievement is completed this year. In spite of Covid, several activities were carried out in 2020-2021 including aquatic activities at the Sullivan Pool with Elliot Smith as Aquatic Director. Elliot is also NRA Range Safety Officer and has been to national camp school for shooting sports director. Other activities have included skiing, camping and tubing at Wolf Creek State Park, archery, October, 2020 Camporee at Camp Drake, a December 16 Court of Honor (Eagle Scout award to Dan Upton), and a February Klondike Derby Day. Plans for Summer, 2021 include summer camp July 11-17, mowing yard at Scout Cabin, flag placements for May Day and Memorial Day, fund raising, and Camp Drake (July 23-25 is 110 yr. Anniversary celebration for Camp Drake).
Wally also passed out a sheet listing troop Scout master’s since 1937 and Eagle Scout Award recipients since 1953, the most recent of which was Daniel Upton in 2020. Elliot Smith has been Scout Master since 2012.
MINUTES: Minutes from the April 12, 2021, meeting were read by the Lion Secretary and moved to be approved by Lion Marvelle Cole, seconded and passed.
Fundraising: Lion President Bill Murphy reported and led discussion of fundraising activity since the last meeting. He had talked to Rev. Brent Budd, location director for the annual Broomcorn Festival. Plans are to hold the festival provided Covid restrictions are lifted in time. The Arcola Lions can have their old spot for a food booth except that there will no longer be a brick wall behind the booth, and electrical connection is a big question mark. The club was also offered a spot on the opposite side of N. Locust St. (north of the taffy booth and in proximity to the Raggedy Ann mural). Again, electrical connections will need to be planned. Lion Tom Sherman made a motion to choose a spot on the west side of the taffy booth on the south side of N. Locust St. The motion was seconded and carried, and Lion President Bill will check it out with Rev. Budd.
There remains no further report on the other grant proposal that Lion Tom Sherman submitted.
Lions Shed: Lion Kevin Huckstep checked out the electrical situation for extra lighting at the Lions shed and will submit an estimate. The wheelchair lift was installed for a Tuscola resident as proposed at the last meeting. Thanks go out to all the Lions who helped accomplish that.
Installation meeting: Lion Secretary Don reported that DG Lion Bill Wallpe will speak on June 28 and do the installation of new officers. A motion was made by Lion Ken Reveal to include a meal. Lion Marvelle Cole will check with Elizabeth Smothers. It will also be a spouses night.
Camps: Lion Dianne Murphy reported that Camp Lions and Camp New Hope do plan to hold camps this summer. The club agreed to a suggestion to hold off any decisions to see if there are any requests for financial help.
Membership: The issue of membership status for the Murphys has been resolved. Lion District Secretary Brad Cash recommended Count them as Active Members in Arcola, until they transfer to a new club where they are going. Will save a lot of headaches later. When they find a club, you will drop them in good standing (as long as they pay their dues) and new club transfers them into the new club. The Murphys are in agreement.
Scout liason: With thanks to outgoing scout liason, Lion Dianne Murphy, who will be moving with husband, Lion President Bill, to Gallatin, TN, and with thanks for her strong suggestion of a nominee replacement, Lion Marvelle Cole put into nomination Lion Ken Reveal to become Scout Liason for the club. The motion was seconded and carried. Lion Ken will do online training and take a test, guided by Wally Smith. The change will occur as of July 1, 2021.
Correspondence: Lion President Bill presented an opportunity from District 1-M for a Cruise on the National Road through southern Illinois on June 12. All of the Lions Clubs on the National Road have agreed to take part, meeting in Marshall, IL and moving on to Casey, IL and Richards Farm for lunch. Then it is on to Greenup, Altamont, St. Elmo, and Vandalia. Each site will offer guided tours of local attractions. Cost is $25.00 per vehicle. Lunch at Richards Farm is $18.00 per person. Anyone wishing to take part may contact Lion President Bill or Secretary Don for detailed information and registration phone numbers.
There was a request for flag bearers for the State Convention.
A thank you was received from Debbie Mason Hemann of Mattoon along with a donation for the use of hospital equipment.
Lion President Elect Jerry Stout issued a challenge to the club requesting that each member try to bring in 2 new members during his presidency. He placed particular emphasis on attracting Hispanic members.

Reading of Last Minutes: The Lion Secretary read the Minutes from the meeting of April 26, 2021. They were approved with a correction by Lion Tom Sherman, seconded and carried. The correction was to wording concerning the proposed location of the Lions Booth at the upcoming Broomcorn Festival. The location is to be described as north of the taffy booth on the west side of N. Locust Street in close proximity to the Raggedy Ann mural.
Treasurer’s Report: Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy gave an update to the previous Treasurer’s Report showing the following balances:
Activity Fund ($ 284.19)
Candy Days $ 255.55
Hospital equipment $ 6,281.52
Dues/Meals $ 783.55
Total $ 7,036.43 as of 05/03/21
Old Business:
Broomcorn Booth Update: From further discussions with Rev. Brent Budd, Lion President Bill Murphy received at least a verbal confirmation of approval for the Arcola Lions to set up a Broomcorn food booth on Wednesday evening prior to the festival in a location north of the taffy booth on the west side of N. Locust Street in close proximity to the Raggedy Ann mural.
Further discussion at this meeting focused on concerns for setup and teardown help, weekend help, and provisions for electricity (220) and water. In addition, confirmation of an actual Broomcorn Festival should be issued before the end of July.
Installation: Lion Marvelle Cole confirmed that Elizabeth Smothers will be willing to prepare a meal for the club on June 28, the evening of Lions Officer Installation and also a Spouses Nite. District Governor Bill Wallpe will be the guest speaker and will also do the installation service.
Website: Lion Ken Reveal reported that the Arcola Lions Club website is up and running. Minutes for the last two meetings have been posted.
New Business: Lion President Bill reported having received a call from an individual in Champaign who has a practically new electric lift chair that is no longer needed. The man wants to donate it to either a charity or the Lions Club. Arcola knows of an individual who is in need of a chair. The Lions Club President will pursue this farther.
Correspondence: The Lion Secretary read a letter from LIF Executive Director Trish Fisher informing everyone of the death of Lion Chris Luttrell from Lemont, IL who was a hearing technician for Illinois Lions and a vital cog in the wheels of progress for the mobile screening units of LIF.
Lion President Elect Jerry Stout also informed the club of the death of PDG Lion Robert Butterworth of Hoopston, ILARCOLA LIONS CLUB, INC.MEETING MINUTES FOR 05/24/21ARCOLA SENIOR CENTER

Minutes from May 10: The Lion Secretary read the Minutes from the meeting of May 10, 2021 which were approved with a motion from Lion Marvelle Cole. The motion was seconded and carried.
Broomcorn Festival discussion: Since the last meeting there have been changes in certain requirements concerning the clubs booth location, etc. Location on the west side of N. Locust St. would deprive the Lions of use of the sidewalk, and there would be no space for the picnic table. In addition, tent setup could not be done before Thursday after the Taffy booth next to the Lions booth is in place because the taffy vendor needs to be able to back his rig into place. The club mindset of those present leaned toward keeping the old spot on the east side of N. Locust St. at the corner. A motion was eventually put forth by Lion Ken Reveal to keep the booth in its regular spot IF the club decides to participate in the Broomcorn Festival. The motion was seconded and passed.
Further discussion focused on the prospect of the club even being able to have a booth this year, physical labor capabilities and available help all being considered. An aging membership with the accompaniment of various health related issues and the availability of physical outside help to set up and tear down dominated the discussion. 12 hr. shifts are out of the question. The notion was put forth to contact all 15 members of the club to get solid commitments for help on this project with specific work times, etc., thereby knowing what the club can expect in terms of available help.
It was also suggested that members come to the next meeting on June 14 with specific ideas of what can realistically be provided at the booth (breakfast, sandwich choices, etc.). The meetings in June will probably determine whether the Arcola Lions Club will have a booth at Broomcorn Festival this year. In fact, the whole festival depends on what the Douglas County Health Dept. decides as determined by the course taken by the Corona Virus situation.
Shed update: Lion Dean Cole reported no progress on the lighting improvements at the Lions shed except to say that a lot of equipment will have to be moved out of the shed in order to accomplish such improvements.
Camp Lions: A message from Lion Dianne Murphy through Lion Marvelle Cole stated that Camp Lion will once again be strictly virtual this summer. Therefore, Arcola will not be committed to any scholarship aid. No word has been received on Camp New Hope.
Arcola Senior High Lions Scholarship: Lion Ken Reveal presented a thank you note to the club from Lions Scholarship recipient Garrett Sigrist.
City fireworks: The club received its usual request for financial support for Arcola’s 4th of July fireworks display. Since the club has not offered such support in the past, and since club finances are limited, the consensus was to not donate.
Correspondence: The Lion Secretary passed around a get well card for Lion Diane Hove who is undergoing treatment for a health issue.
MINUTES FROM MEETING OF 06/14/2021
ARCOLA SENIOR CENTER
This meeting of the Arcola Lions Club met with seven members present, 1st Vice President Jerry Stout presiding.
Pledge of Allegiance Lion Stephen Edwards

Prayer of Invocation Lion Secretary Don Winch
Minutes: The Lion Secretary read the Minutes from the Meeting of May 24th, 2020 which were accepted as read by a motion from Lion Marvelle Cole, seconded and passed.
Treasurer’s Update: The Lion Secretary shared a Treasurer’s update in her absence. The ending balance as of June 8, 2021 is $7060.97. The only transactions for the previous month were $19.75 for Scout Cabin water and $.27 interest earned.
Broomcorn Festival: Lion Marvelle Cole passed out a 2021 Broom-corn Festival work schedule for the full five days including a day for setup and a day for tear down. The purpose is to retrieve commitments from club members to determine if participation in the festival is even possible. Word has already been received from five members either by group email or in agreement with said email that participation is highly doubtful due to shortages in membership and available outside help plus related health issues. The schedule is to be returned to Lions Marvelle and Dianne Murphy @ 9731 E. County Rd., 1800N, Arcola, IL 61910 no later than June 23 so that a final decision can be made at the meeting of June 28.
Installation Meeting/Spouses Night: The next scheduled meeting of the Arcola Lions Club is the Annual Installation Meeting which is traditionally a Spouses Night. Guest speaker will be Lion District Governor Bill Wallpe who will also do the installing of new Arcola Lions Officers for 2021-22. The Lion Secretary will make calls to determine a food count as Elizabeth Smothers will be preparing a meal for the occasion. The meeting will be at the Arcola Senior Center at 6:30 p.m.
Shed improvements: Improvements primarily from the standpoint of lighting at the Lions shed were discussed following submission of a bid of $1,800.00 from Huckstep Construction. The consensus of the membership at the present time was to table the project to a later time.
The next scheduled meeting of the Arcola Lions Club is the Spouses Night and Installation meeting on June 28 at 6:30 at the Arcola Senior Center. Come prepared to discuss the Broomcorn Festival and plans for future meetings of the club (frequency of meetings, time, and meal possibilities).
INSTALLATION/SPOUSES NIGHT
JUNE 28, 2021
11 members of the Arcola Lions Club were present at the Arcola Senior Center for the annual Officers Installation Meeting and Spouses Night. Lion President Bill Murphy had four members introduce their spouses who included Lion Ken Reveal’s wife Paula, Lion Don Winch’s wife Flo, Dan Curry’s wife Dixie, and Tom Sherman’s wife Diane. Lion President Elect Jerry Stout introduced guests Mayor Jesus Garza and his wife.
Minutes: The Lion Secretary read the Minutes from the meeting of June 14 which were moved to be accepted by Lion Ken Reveal, seconded and passed.
Treasurer’s Update: Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy reported an approximate total balance in the Lion Treasury of $6,500.00. The final figure will be available after the 30th of the month when the bank statement is received.
District Governor: District Governor William Bill Wallpe awarded service chevrons to Lions Doug Beachy for 10 years of service, Dianne Murphy for 10 years of service, Tom Sherman for 10 years of service, and Dan Curry for 45 years of service in Lionism.
Installation of Officers: DG Wallpe installed the following to their respective offices for 2021-22:
– Lion Dean Cole to the office of Lion Tamer.
– Lion Tom Sherman to the office of Tail Twister.
– Lion Doug Beachy to the office of Membership Chairman in absentia.
– Lion Stephen Edwards to the office of 1 Year Director on the Board of Directors.
– Lions Marvelle Cole and Kenneth Reveal to the offices of 2 Year Directors on the Board of Directors.
– Lion Tom Sherman to the office of Treasurer.
– Lion Don Winch to the office of Secretary.
– Lion Barbara Edwards to the office of 1st Vice President.
– Lion Jerry Stout to the office of President.
District Governor Wallpe officially proclaimed all officers officially installed. Immediate Past President Bill Murphy then passed the gavel to newly installed Lion President Jerry Stout. It was Lion Marvelle Cole who pointed out that Lion Jerry is the first repeat President in the 75 year history of the Arcola Lions Club. Lion President Stout acknowledged Lion Secretary Don Winch who presented the Past President patch and the Lion statuette to Immediate Past President Lion Bill Murphy, thanking him for leading the club through a most unusual and difficult year with all its uncertainties and down time. The club held together despite those uncertainties thanks to Lion President Bills leadership.
Surprise!: Lion Dean Cole stepped to the podium to give what the Lion Secretary assumed would be a hospital equipment report. To the contrary, Lion Dean proceeded to give a report of happenings in the club about 12 years ago, all leading up to presenting the Secretary, Lion Don, with the Lion of the Year Award for 2020-21 which Lion Don had long ago assumed would not be given out this crazy year. No one asked him to order anything. Surprise! Many thanks from the guy who only hears half of what goes on and makes up the rest? But when it gets to when the mind goes, Ill have to give Lion Dean back his pen.
Old Business:
– Broom Corn Festival: Discussion then turned to whether the club will participate in the 50th Annual Broomcorn Festival or not. Several spoke of the lack of personnel to do the heavy lifting and put in all the hours required to fully activate the food booth. Many health risks were also a serious consideration. One could almost hear sighs of relief when Lion Tom Sherman made the motion to NOT participate in the Broomcorn Festival this year. His motion was seconded and carried.
– Other thoughts: Lion Dianne Murphy started discussion of other forms of fund raising for the club. She described a raffle project carried out by all members going door to door which would include community business sponsorships with a prize yet to be determined. It was finally suggested that further discussion of alternate forms of fundraising be put off until September.
– Picnic: The annual picnic/social gathering in August was discussed and it was decided with a motion from Lion Marvelle that a social gathering be held in the Arcola Senior Center where people would be protected from weather and bugs. It would be on a date in August to be announced, and Lion Bill Murphy offered to provide his usual catch of fish (from Tennessee this year?), and those in attendance will bring the usual side dishes and desserts. Lion Marvelle offered to provide beverages. More information will be forthcoming.
– Future Meetings: Discussion moved to the frequency of meetings in the next year and whether or not we want to have a meal. Lion 1st Vice-President Barbara Edwards made a motion that the club meet once a month with a meal. The motion was seconded and carried, and it was ultimately decided to meet on the 2nd Monday of the month at 6:30 at the Arcola Senior Center with a meal prepared by Elizabeth Smothers. Lion Marvelle will pursue those details. The next official meeting after the social gathering in August will be on September 13.
On a final note, Lion Dianne Murphy reminded the club that former Lion and Treasurer, Rick Edwards, has been doing some minor auditing and required tax reporting for the club since he retired from his role as Treasurer. Rick retired from an active role in tax preparation a little over a year ago but continued to help the club. He wants to sever all things accounting as of the end of this year, so our new Treasurer, Lion Tom Sherman, will need to perhaps touch bases with Rick to get up to speed on what Rick has been doing.
Addendum: Lion Marvelle has checked with Elizabeth Smothers about food preparation once a month next Lions year, and she agreed to do it. Her only hesitation concerned price. Food prices, as we all know, have gone up, and understandably, Elizabeth will need to raise the cost per meal to $12.00. Meeting only once a month, the annual cost for meals for members will still almost be cut in half. ARCOLA LIONS CLUB, INC.MEETING MINUTES FOR 09/13/21

Minutes from 06/28/21: Minutes from the last meeting, ie., Installation/Spouses Night, were read by the Lion Secretary and approved by a motion from Lion Steve Edwards; seconded and carried.
Treasurers Report: Lion Treasurer Tom Sherman submitted a report on the club’s finances from July 1, 2021 September 13, 2021, a copy of which is attached to these Minutes. Lion Tom reported the following: Activity Fund bal. ($1,875.05)
Candy Days bal. – $ 255.55
Hosp. equip. bal. – $6,531.52
Dues/Meals bal. – $1,143.55
Total balance – $6,055.57
Membership request: Lion Doug Beachy has requested a transfer to “At Large” status “until further notice.” According to the By-Laws of the Arcola Lions Club and Lions International, “At Large” status is conferred to a member “who has moved from the community, or because of health or other legitimate reasons, is unable to retain membership in this club, and upon whom the board of directors of this club desires to confer this status. It was determined by the Board of Directors, which encompasses most of the club, that these guidelines were not truly met. The status of “Affiliate Member” more closely addresses the situation at hand in that “A quality individual of the community who currently is not able to fully participate as an Active Member of the club but desires to support the club and its community service initiatives and be affiliated with the club. This status may be conferred by the invitation of the club’s Board of Directors. This was the desire of the club’s Board of Directors and approved with a motion from Lion Don Winch; seconded and carried.
Hearing aid request: A “Lions of Illinois Foundation Social Services Request Form for Hearing Aids” was received by the Arcola Lions Club Secretary in mid-August from the Foundation,s Social Services Clerk, Denise Domanico. The form was filled out by Harold L. Churchill, Jr., a senior resident of Kemp, IL. Accompanying the request was the financial cost itemization from Sarah Bush Lincoln in Mattoon along with other cost breakdowns. Mr. Churchill has already developed an association with Sarah Bush in Mattoon. Total cost from SBL will be $1,132.00 for two (2) restored hearing aids. The Lion Secretary has been in contact with Mr. Churchill who, on his request form, asked for hearing aid repair. He reports that SBL would charge $450.00 for repairs. At issue is the inability of the Arcola Lions Club to provide such expenses at this time and probably for the foreseeable future. Lion Ken Reveal made a motion to deny the request as it currently stands, and the Lion Secretary will report back to Ms. Domanico at the Lions of Illinois Foundation and to Mr. Churchill.
Candy Days: The annual Candy Days of Lions International is October 9, 2021. The Arcola Lions Club will participate, and Lions Steve and Barbara Edwards, Don Winch, Ken Reveal, Marvelle Cole, and Tom Sherman have agreed to take part by collecting at Arcolas four-way stop. Lion President Stout will check with “At Large” and “Affiliate” members for further help and will notify club members of their assignments.
Convention Delegates: The District 1-M Convention is to be held in Effingham, IL on October 29-30. The club is entitled to two (2) voting delegates who vote on amendments to the Constitution & By-Laws of the District and on incoming officers for 2022-23. Lion President Jerry Stout asked for volunteers, and there were none. The club will not be represented.
Committee Assignments: Lion President Stout appointed various members to committees of the club for the upcoming year. A list will be sent out in early October by the Lion Secretary. Since the position of Membership Chairperson is now vacant with the change in membership status of Lion Doug Beachy from Active to Affiliate member, Lion Secretary Don Winch volunteered to be Membership Chairperson for 2021-22.
Fundraising: Lion Treasurer Tom Sherman presented an idea to the club for a fundraiser in the spring of 2022. The spring “Pop the Top” Car Rally takes place in June, and Lion Tom reported that it was his observation at the last rally that there were no food vendors. This would be an opportunity for the Arcola Lions to make some money with a scaled down version of the Broomcorn project. Lion Ken Reveal made a motion that Lion Tom check out the possibility with the city “powers that be” and report back to the club.
A 50/50 raffle was also discussed, and more discussion will follow at the next meeting which is scheduled for Monday, October 11 at 6:30 at the Arcola Senior Center. No meal will be served.
MEETING OF OCTOBER 11, 2021

MINUTES: The Lion Secretary read the Minutes from the meeting of September 13, 2021 which were accepted with a motion from Lion Stephen Edwards. The motion was seconded and carried.
TREASURER’S REPORT: The Treasurers Report was presented by Lion Treasurer Tom Sherman, a copy of which is included with these Minutes. In summary:
09/12/2021 beginning balance = $6,055.57
10/11/2021 income since 09/13/21 = $ 263.00
10/11/2021 expenses since 09/13/21 = $ 479.92
Balance 10/11/2021 = $5,838.65

Candy Days as of 10/11/21 = $ 255.55
Hospital Equipment as of 10/11/21 = $6,581.52
Dues/Meals as of 10/11/21 = $1,356.55
Total as of 10/11/21 = $5,838.65
Lion Ken Reveal raised the question as to why the gas/electric bill ran so high for the Scout cabin ($129.00 for a month of little use of the cabin). Lion Marvelle Cole explained that gas/electric was on the budget plan with settlement up or down taking place at the end of the annual billing cycle. Lion Ken wondered at what temperature the thermostat was set in the Scout cabin. He is going to check on that. Lion Marvelle also posed a question concerning actual ownership of the Scout cabin and it was understood by some Lions that the club owned the building but it sits on Arcola Library land. Should the City of Arcola bear any responsibility for the Scout cabin? Lion Treasurer Tom Sherman volunteered to compose a letter to the city requesting possible financial aid for water use costs.
A further question was raised by Lion Ken, who is the new Boy Scout of America laison between the Arcola Lions and the BSA headquarters in Champaign, IL, as to the clubs liability if a charter is offered by the club to the Arcola Boy Scouts. If the club owns the building, the club might want to entertain the possibility of merely offering the building as a meeting place since there are so few members in the local Boy Scout troop. Lion Kens main concern relates to national emphasis on prior cases of sexual indiscretion/harassment which he read about in a national editorial release. A motion was presented by not to sign anything related to a charter to BSA until further information is obtained. Lion Marvelle or Lion Ken or Lion Tom were going to check with the past Liason, Lion Dianne Murphy, to see if she might shed some light on the subject. The motion to put off signing a charter was seconded and passed.
Lion Ken Reveal also reported that he renewed the subscription to the club’s website and was willing to bear the cost of $180.00. Thank you Lion Ken.
Candy Days: Lion President Jerry Stout is Chairperson of the Candy Days collection campaign which was held at the State four-way stop in Arcola on Saturday, October 9, 2021. Lion Jerry reported the income from currency only. Loose change had yet to be counted. Total currency was $1,525.00, and the break-down is as follows: $657.00 collected from 8:00-10:00.
$868.00 collected from 10:00-12:00.
Lion Jerry offered a suggestion that due to light traffic at 8:00 a.m. (normal starting time for the collection), the club might want to consider taking advantage of more traffic with shifts from 8:30-10:30 and 10:30-12:30 to possibly boost revenue.
50/50 Raffle: Lion Marvelle Cole passed out 50/50 raffle tickets to be sold by club members as a fundraising effort. However, Lion President Jerry reported that authorization must be procured from the City of Arcola along with a certification number. The consensus of the club was to have Lion President Jerry apply for said certificate number which must then appear on each ticket. Club members were instructed to delay selling any tickets until after the next meeting by which time the required number will have hopefully been obtained.
A suggestion from Lion Dianne Murphy was relayed by Lion Marvelle to the effect that Lion Dianne would be willing to draft a letter to Arcola businesses asking for donations to help the Arcola Lions Club in carrying out its mission to serve the community through provision of eye glasses, scholarship support, sending children to camp, vision and hearing screening, and health fairs. Lion Ken Reveal made a motion to allow Lion Dianne to draft and make copies of such a letter. The motion was seconded and carried.
The next meeting of the Arcola Lions Club will take place at the Arcola Presbyterian Church on Monday, November 8, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. Again, there will be no meal.
Seven Lions were present at the meeting held at the Arcola Senior Center at 6:30 on Monday, December 13, 2021. Heather Gauna and her daughter Hannah were also present as guests for the express purpose of doing the drawing for the 50/50 Lions Club Raffle which had been in progress since November 8. The club sponsored Hannah as a past camper.

50/50 Drawing: A total of $4,340.00 was collected as of this evening. All members sold their initial 10 ticket requirement, and an additional 28 tickets were sold at 3 basketball games at the high school. Some members went above and beyond and sold additional tickets.
Hannah Gauna gave the tub several good spins and made sure no tickets were stuck anywhere, then proceeded to draw a ticket. The winning ticket for a total of $2,170.00 belonged to Nathan Roberts. An announcement will appear in the Arcola Record Herald as will a thank you for the support of the local community and people from outside the community from Lion President Jerry.
Correspondence: A thank you card was received by Lion Dean Cole (Hospital Equipment Committee) from AAA Mobility Specialists for all of the club’s material donations over the past year through Lion Cole. Old wheel chairs and parts, etc. were donated to AAA who uses the parts to refurbish wheelchairs primarily for armed service veterans who need them and can’t afford new.
A note of thanks was received from LIF for the club’s donation of $1,880.15 from money collected on Candy Days.
Also, Lion President Jerry Stout received back from Boy Scouts of America an application filled out by Lion Ken Reveal to be approved as liaison between the Arcola Lions Club and BSA of Champaign. Lion President Stouts signature was required, and it was the consensus of the club to allow such signature to be made.
Scout cabin: Lion Ken Reveal reported that the thermostat at the Boy Scout Cabin was not readable. There seem to be two heating systems, but perhaps only one is functioning. The temperature inside of the building seemed cool. Lion Dean Cole added that he had stored a lift chair in the north room of the Scout building because there was no more room at the Lions shed.
Treasurer’s Report: Lion Treasurer Tom Sherman left a full report in his excused absence from this meeting showing expenses since the November 8th meeting of $2,206.86 for flowers for the Diane Hove service, LIF Candy Days donation, U.S. Postal Service PO box rental for 2022, utilities, Scout cabin electric and water, and shed electricity. The club’s balance as of 12/13/2021 is $17,386.15. A copy of this report is to be included with these Minutes. Additional income came from a letter writing campaign by Lion Dianne Murphy to local businesses requesting donations to help the club carry out its services to the community. So far this has netted $8,250.00.
Great work, Lion Dianne, and all the way from Tennessee!

50 YEAR SERVICE AWARDS
TO
LIONS DEAN COLE & JERRY STOUT
JANUARY 10, 2022
Our lives are full of benchmark moments of goals reached and achievements consummated starting with birth itself. We usually celebrate such occasions: graduations, marriages, the arrival of offspring, promotions, small and seemingly insignificant benchmarks like our offspring reaching the age of 25 resulting in reduced auto insurance rates for Mom and Dad, reaching retirement age, burning of the mortgage, and reaching certain chronological moments in our lives.
The latter is what we as Lions are to celebrate this
evening.
Two members of this Arcola Lions Club have been members for a half century; 50 years of meritorious service in this community as Lions. I speak of Lions Dean Cole and Jerry Stout.
In this, our club’s 75th year, it is rather unusual to have one, let alone 2, members achieve such a meritorious fete. Lions Dean and Jerry joined the Arcola Lions in January of 1972. Lion Dean was sponsored by the late Tom Blagg. Lion Jerry has actually been a Lion for a bit more than 50 years as he was a transfer into our club from the state of Ohio. Lion Dean, who by the way was my sponsor, has served on several committees and has for the past several years been the “heart and soul” of the club’s hospital equipment loaner program. He served as our 63rd President in 2009-2010 and is currently our Lion Tamer, getting things set up for our meetings. Lion Dean has been chosen Lion of the Year no less than 3 times in 2010-2011, 2015-2016, and most recently, 2018-2019.
Lion Jerry has also served the club well on several committees but most notably as chairperson of the Candy Days Fundraiser for at least the past 33 years. According to the records I was able to find, he was given this assignment in 1988. In 1983-1984 Lion Jerry served as the club’s 37th President. He currently serves as our 75th President, the first Lion in the club’s 75 year history to have served two terms nonconsecutively. Lion Jerry was voted “Lion of the Year” in the 1982-1983 term.
Lion Dean and Lion Jerry are called forward to each receive a plaque honoring a full half century of membership in the Arcola Lions Club plus a 50 year pin and certificate. A copy of this presentation was also given to each of them.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned by a motion from Lion Steve Edwards which was seconded and carried at 7:05 P.M
Respectfully submitted,
Lion Don Winch, Secretary
ARCOLA LIONS CLUB, INC.
MINUTES OF MEETING FOR 02/14/2022
Present: Lion President Jerry Stout, Lion Treasurer Tom Sherman, Lion Secretary Don Winch, and Lions Dean Cole, Marvelle Cole, and Ken Reveal.
Pledge of Allegiance led by Lion President Jerry Stout
“America” led by Lion Marvelle Cole
Invocation offered by Lion Secretary Don Winch
Minutes: Minutes from the meeting of January 10, 2022 were read by the Lion Secretary followed by a motion from Lion Marvelle Cole to accept them as read. The motion was seconded and carried.
Treasurer’s Report: Lion Treasurer Tom Sherman gave a full Treasurer’s Report as of 02/14/22 showing 2 donations totaling $200 and expenses totaling $1,904.89 which included International dues for the second half, insurance (an annual expense), District 1-M dues on 14 members for the second half of the year, a bill from Battery Specialists for a wheel chair battery, utilities at the Scout Cabin including water and electric. This leaves a balance as of 2/14/2022 of $16,641.63.
Funds are as follows:
Activity Fund $8,150.81 ($1,251.24 liability)
Candy Days Fund $ 806.40 –
Hospital Equip. Fund $6,701.62 ($ 79.90 liability)
Due/Meals $ 982.80 ($ 373.75 liability)
A motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report was made by Lion Don Winch followed by a second. The motion passed.
Sight & Sound Sweepstakes: Lion Secretary Don Winch explained the Sight & Sound Sweepstakes which is now underway by the Lions of Illinois Foundation. Booklets contain 3 tickets each, and the club is responsible for twenty books.
Each book is $10.00. There are three Early Bird Drawings on the first Monday of March, April, and May. The main drawing will be held at the State Convention on May 22 in Springfield, IL. Tickets and monies turned in early may be entered in as many as all three Early Bird Drawings, and all will be entered into the May 22 drawing.
Diabetes Retinopathy Awareness Campaign: The Diabetes Retinopathy Awareness Campaign will be from March 1 to May 31. The Lion Secretary alerted the club that he was in contact with Douglas County Health Dept. about a possible Health Fair in September. Perhaps the Arcola Senior Group could get involved. Arrangements are all very tentative. Major players must be contacted, and venue must be established. More to follow.
Spring Auto Show: Lion Tom Sherman has been in contact with the leadership for the annual Arcola Auto Show which usually takes place in late June or early July. There were no food vendors at last year’s show, and Lion Tom approached show leadership with the possibility of the Lions providing a food stand with hot dogs and hamburgers; a simple menu with some beverages. The show leadership showed some enthusiasm for the suggestion. The show begins in the morning and is usually finished by 3:00. The club could probably handle 2-3 hour shifts. Members can provide grills, tables and chairs, and probably a small tent. Lion Tom will look into health dept. requirements and permits. This would be on a Saturday involving about 6 hours total. Those present thought this would be very possible. The club would most likely set up near the corner of Water St. and Main St.
Spring Roundup: Lion Secretary Don explained the annual Spring Roundup on March 5 in Springfield. Formerly called “The Forum”, due to distance and expense those present did not express any interest.
Mattoon Lions sponsored special meeting: The Mattoon Lions Club is holding a special Zone 5 meeting on March 3 at 6:00 at the Honey Bee Café in Mattoon. The meeting is going to focus on membership recruiting and member retention. Lions President Jerry and Lion Secretary Don said that they would attend (Lion Jerry remembered after the meeting that he had a prior commitment).
Arcola Lions Future discussion: Lion President Jerry and Lion Secretary Don would probably refer to this as talking about “the elephant (or the lion) in the room”. The Mattoon Club’s announcement above stimulated thoughts of those present to the future of Arcola Lions. Down to 8 active members, several thoughts were expressed, and a few ideas were even kicked around such as putting something in the Record Herald inviting anyone interested in finding out more about the Arcola Lions Club to come to a special informational meeting, perhaps in April or May. There was discussion on how to get younger people involved, and it was suggested that perhaps Coach Lindsay from the High School could join us at one of our meetings to add to the discussion. Perhaps more ideas will spring loose from the meeting in Mattoon on March 3.
Proposed International dues adjustment: The proposed dues adjustment includes a $7 increase to the current $43 international dues, spread out over three years. Under the proposal, international dues would be adjusted according to the following schedule: – $3 increase on July 1, 2023
- $2 increase on July 1, 2024
- $2 increase on July 1, 2025
Lion Dean Cole made a motion to adjourn at 8:00 which was seconded and carried.
Respectfully submitted,
Don Winch, Secretary
ARCOLA LIONS CLUB, INC.

MINUTES: In the interest of time, the Lion Secretary suggested dispensing with the reading of the Minutes of 02/14/22. The suggestion was moved by Lion Tom Sherman, seconded and carried.
Treasurer’s Report: Lion Treasurer Tom Sherman reported no income for the previous month and bills were paid for 2 club Sight & Sound Sweepstakes tickets, utilities for the Scout Cabin and shed electricity, all totaling $189.75. This left an overall balance of $16,451.88 as of 3/14/22.
Officer Slate for 2022-23: While tonight should be the 2nd reading of the Slate of Officers for 2022-23, the slate remains a work in progress with the offices of President and 1st Vice President still up in the air. The 3rd and final reading will take place next month.
As of Tuesday, March 15, word was received that Lion Vice President Barbara Edwards has agreed to take the office of President as originally nominated with the understanding that plans to move from Arcola remain in the works.
Lion Ken Reveal has agreed to step in as 1st Vice President. The second reading of the slate now looks like this:
President Lion Barbara Edwards
1st Vice President Lion Ken Reveal
Treasurer Lion Tom Sherman
Secretary Lion Don Winch
Lion Tamer Lion Dean Cole
Tail Twister Lion Tom Sherman
Membership Chairperson Lion Don Winch
Director Lion Marvelle Cole
Immediate Past President Lion Jerry Stout
Auto Show: Lion Tom Sherman has agreed to be chairman of this Lions Club food stand project at the annual Arcola Auto Show which will take place on July 2, 2022. Fare will include hot dogs and hamburgers, chips and drinks. Setup will be in the area of the corner of Water St. and Main St., and hours will be 9:00 – 3:00 with Lions (and perhaps helpers) taking on 3 two hour shifts. Lion Tom will look into permits, etc.
Future of the club: Lions Dean Cole and Don Winch attended the Zone 5 special meeting in Mattoon on March 3rd, and Lion Don handed out information received at that meeting. Key take-aways from the meeting included focus on the club motto, “We Serve”, and the key passions or objectives of clubs and their members. What will bring satisfaction to club members? “Your club must decide what is more important, 100% attendance or 100% service. Then sell the product that you are going to deliver.” Lion President Jerry shared a suggested promotion piece for the newspaper that he and his wife, Sue, composed to hopefully attract prospective members to an informational event that will happen this spring.
Hospital equipment: Lion Dean Cole gave a status report on repairs to the shed overhead door. Lion Steve Edwards attempted to complete such repairs, but there apparently is more involved than anticipated. Paul Rocke from Rocke Overhead Doors is to meet with members of the club at 8:30 Tuesday morning, March 15, at the shed and give an assessment of repairs and their cost.
Lions Steve Edwards, Jerry Stout and Don Winch met with Paul Rocke as indicated above. Paul estimated a cost of $120 for the repair to the bottom door seal, the seal needing to be a bit more substantial in quality and strength than what was originally planned. Lion Jerry asked about installing an electric door opener. The cost would be in the neighborhood of $800.00. Since the intended repair was absolutely necessary, it was decided to go ahead with just the door seal.
Lion Tom Sherman made a motion to adjourn the regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. which was seconded and carried.
Respectfully submitted,
Lion Don Winch, Secretary

Annual District Governor visit: Prior to his installation, DG Scott Friese visited the Arcola Lions Club on June 13 to install new officers for 2022-23. Lion Marvelle Cole suggested holding off until January, contacting DG Friese at that time to see what his schedule might allow.
Prospective member: Devon Franco was introduced by Lion Jerry Stout as a prospective new member. Devon was actually introduced at the September meeting as well. He is a student in mortuary science, taking courses on the internet through Des Moines Area Community College, a 2.5-year course, and working with local mortician and former Lion, Jeff Edwards. Expenditures included $20.00 to District 1-M and $192.57 for utilities for Scout cabin electric & gas, Scout cabin water, and shed electricity bringing net income since October 10 to $215.93. A complete written accounting accompanies these Minutes showing a balance as of 11/28/22 of $17,592.39.
Hospital equipment: Lion Dean Cole reported several monetary donations made to the club. Several pieces of equipment have been loaned out.
December meeting: As it turns out, a quorum for the December meeting is in doubt with several members being away or attending to other obligations. Lion Marvelle Cole made a motion that the meeting for December 12 be skipped. The next meeting of the Arcola Lions will be scheduled for January 9,2023.
The motion was seconded and carried.
Refrigeration equipment: Lion Ken Reveal had been in conversation with David Kaufman from the appliance store near Aikman’s Wildlife Refuge west of Arcola about all the refrigeration equipment stored in the Lions Club shed and the room such equipment was occupying.
Apparently David checked out the equipment and would be willing to remove all of the freezers and refrigerators at no cost to the club. After a period of discussion, during which Lion Marvelle Cole pointed out that the club often uses the refrigerator and freezer at the Senior Center as well as equipment at the nearby firehouse. However, those options may not always be available to the club. We may need the club’s own equipment on occasion, and as they are, they are not costing the club anything. Their location is not really conducive for much use otherwise. The club uses the refrigeration equipment for soda and meat cooling. Lion Tom Sherman made a motion to leave things as they are. The motion was seconded and carried.
Candy Days Update: Lion Jerry Stout reported that a total of $1,441.90 was collected on Oct. 15th. Eight people volunteered to help, and one case of candy was purchased from LIF for $120.00. Lion Jerry placed a letter of thanks to the community of Arcola in the Record Herald for their support at a cost of $40.00.
60% of revenue generally goes to LIF. The local club keeps 40% which goes toward eyeglass aid. Traditionally the club also donates the remainder of the previous year’s 40% back to LIF. According to Lion Jerry, $769.14 will be sent to LIF, and $512.76 will go into the Arcola Lions Club’s Candy Day Fund.
Taking into account what is left over in the Candy Day Fund from 2021-22, Lion Tom Sherman made a motion to send $1,455.54 to the Lions of Illinois Foundation. The motion was seconded and carried. $512.76 is the new Candy Day Fund balance.
Other business: Lion Marvelle Cole made a motion that the Arcola Lions send a donation in the amount of $200 to the One Stop Community Christmas ministry since the club is no longer able to help physically as it has done in the past. The motion was seconded and carried.
