Tri-County Journal February 7, 2013 – “Heart of a Lion – Serving community with medical equipment loans”

No one seems to know for sure exactly how long the Arcola Lions Club has been in the practice of loaning out medical equipment to those in need of such items, but suffice it to say, members report, “It’s been a pretty long time.” Long enough that current member Dean Cole noted the effort was already ongoing when he joined, back in 1971. No, it was before that says member David Dilliner, recalling several times as a child helping his father, who was also a Lion, deliver items to people temporarily laid up. “It just seems like this has always been part of the club.” Dilliner said. Regardless when the effort started, which could have been anytime since the club’s chartering in 1947, it remains an important part of the club’s service to the community and of which the 42 active members are understandably proud. Word-of-mouth has been the primary means by which area folks – many whose insurance doesn’t cover such items, have difficulty handling the associated co-pay, or aren’t sure whether a particular model will work well for them – learn of the free program offered through the Arcola Lions. Need a hospital bed at home for a few weeks or months while recuperating from surgery or illness? What about special accommodations for your shower or bathtub? Maybe you have been relegated to using crutches, a walker, wheelchair, or scooter in order to get around. Perhaps you need a mechanical lift to assist someone in your household in getting in and out of bed. You or someone you love may have been advised by a doctor to use a sleep apnea machine. All of these , and more, are currently available through the club … and members even deliver the equipment to you and, if applicable, set it up in your home. Equipment has slowly accumulated over the years, much of it donated by folks no longer in need of the items but wanting to see them find another temporary home where they can be put to good use. Other items have been purchased by the club when someone came to them in need of something not already in the inventory. “Wd to sore things in a basement off site from where the club meets, but pretty soon that got to be inconvenient and insufficient for what we had,” said current President John Hove. And so, sometime in the 1980s, the club erected a 30-foot by 40-foot steel storage building. Inside it are dozens of crutches, and canes, several hospital beds, a number of lift chairs, shower commodes and bath benches. walkers dangle form the ceiling and several like new scooters are parked underneath selves holding all manner of smaller medical equipment and supplies. The monetary value of the equipment ranges from $10 into the thousands of dollars … but the emotional value to recipients and happiness it brings to club members is priceless. “Last year we were able to help out a high school football player who had a leg injury and was in need of a wheelchair during his convalescence. There’s another fellow we’ve helped, who has ended up having tow hip replacements, that has been able to use numerous items,” said member Ron McConnell. Lion Dianne Murphy was very excited to be able to provide an adjustable hospital bed for the young daughter of a co-worker, which has made caring for the child much easier for the parents. Requests for equipment come in anywhere from several times a month to several times a week. If at all possible, the Lions Club tries to accommodate each request… not an easy or financially insignificant task. Two members in particular — Curtis Atteberry and Dean Cole — take on the “lion’s” share of maintenance work to ensure that things are in proper working order before they are re-loaned, though other members also help out. Some take on delivery or pick-up duties, while most members help out with some of the fundraising activities that help to supplement the equipment fund. “We also have been fortunet enough to sometimes get financial donations form individuals or their families who were grateful for having been helped out by our equipment loan program,” said Murphy. The club used to limit loaning of equipment to folks residing within the Arcola school district, but as their inventory – and the need – have grown, they have expanded the boundaries. Now their equipment has been placed with people living in other communities, including Paris, Champaign, Villa Grove, and Mattoon-Charleston. “If there’s someone out there who is truly in need of something, and we’ve got it just sitting here in storage, what good is that?” We’re here to help!” said McConnell. For more information about the Arcola Lions Club medical equipment program, call Curtis Atteberry at 217-268-4462 or find Arcola Lions Club online at http://users.consolidated.net/cspkaye/home.html

Record-Herald May 12, 2016

Recently Arcola Lions Club donated $700 to the Arcola Food Pantry.   Prior to Christmas Arcola Lions Club received several donations to help with the expense of food purchases for the Christmas baskets delivered on December 24th.   Because of a large donation of food by the Country Salvage Store, our expense to purchase the food this year was considerably lower than past years.  At a recent Lions Club meeting it was suggested that we give any money donated to Arcola Lions Club, but not used for the purchase of food for the food baskets, to the Arcola Food Pantry.

Saturday, March 12th Arcola Lions Club hosted the District 1M Forum.   Nearly 60 members of Lions Clubs throughout the district were in attendance.   Thank you to the Arcola First Methodist Church members for offering your Church as the meeting site.

Tuesday, March 22nd Arcola Lions Club hosted four members from the Villa Grove Lions Club.   Plans were finalized for the Arcola Pack-A-Sack project.   Members met at the Scout Building on Saturday, April 9th at 8:30 a.m. and delivered the sacks with instructions to all residents of Arcola.   On Saturday, April 16th members met at the Scout Cabin at 9:00 a.m. to collect the donations.  Non-perishable foods and monetary donations were taken to the Methodist Church to sort, and then the food and money was delivered to the Food Pantry.   The community of Arcola donated 3843 pounds of food, and $175.00 cash to the Food Pantry.   Thank you to the community and all who helped with the Pack-A-Sack food drive!  (see accompanying photo)

Tuesday, April 26th was Spouse’s Night, with guest speaker, AHS AD Coach Zach Zehr, sharing information with the club about the community involvement of our student athletes.    Lion Dean Cole was honored as 2015-2016 Lion of the Year.   Dean has been a Lion for several years, and is very dedicated to the Hospital Equipment Program, as well as the Annual Beef Raffle, and all other Lions Club projects.   Congratulations, Dean !     (see accompanying photo)

On Saturday, May 21st, in conjunction with the Annual Car Show, a free will donation breakfast prepared and served by Arcola Lions Club members, will be held at Sweepers Restaurant.   Proceeds from this breakfast will benefit the diabetic retinopathy program sponsored by Lions Club International.   Breakfast will consist of biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, and drinks, and will be served from 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.   At the breakfast, we will kick off our annual beef raffle.   Tickets are $5 each, or five for $20, and can be purchased from any Arcola Lions Club member.   Two winners will receive a quarter of a beef, donated by Mark and Debbie Nacke, and processed by Dutch Valley Meats, and there will be three other prizes (more information to follow).   The drawing will be on Sunday, during the Broom Corn Festival.

June 8th, Arcola Lions Club will host the Spring Hearing Screening.   More information will be provided as it gets closer.   Anyone interested in participating in the hearing screening is encouraged to contact John or Diane Hove, coordinators.   This is open to the public, and there is no fee.

As the fiscal year for Arcola Lions Club draws to an end, we will have the Installation of Officers for 2016-2017 on Tuesday, June 28, 2016.   Lions of Illinois Foundation President Jim Strange will install new officers, and will give a brief update on Foundation upcoming events.

Arcola Lions Club welcomes anyone interested in joining our service organization.   Our meetings are the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, September through June, and are held at Sweeper’s Restaurant in Arcola at 6:30 p.m.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MINUTES

06/25/2018

Present:  Lion President Tom Sherman, Secretary Don Winch, Treasurer Dianne Murphy, and Lions Dean Cole, Jerry Stout, and Doug Beachy.

Memberships:  Lion President Sherman brought before the Board a request for resignation from the Arcola Lions Club from Larry Chancellor.  The Lion President also presented a suggestion to drop Jeff Van Dyke from membership since he has moved from the community but may want reinstatement in order to transfer membership at a later time.  The club was also informed of the death of Lion David Dilliner on Sunday, June 24, 2018 which will necessitate his removal from membership.  Lion Curtis Atteberry’s request to resign from the club was handled at the last meeting on June 11.

All requests were approved by the Board of Directors.

Donation:  This being Installation Night and Spouses Night, there will be a guest speaker.  She is Luci Englum, an Arcola native who manages one of the local radio stations and also is a supporter of the St. Jude Children’s Hospital Cancer Run.  She will be speaking on that subject, to which Lion President Tom moved that the club donate one-hundred dollars ($100.00) to that cause.  The motion was seconded and carried.

The Board of Directors meeting adjourned to the regular meeting.

REGULAR MEETING MINUTES

06/25/2018

Twelve Lions and four spouses were present along with Lion Zone Chairman Mark Krutsinger and his entourage from Arthur Lions Club.  Other guests included Paul Alwardt and his wife Chris, Marvelle Cole’s brother and his wife from Texas; the guest speaker for the evening, Luci Englum; and Wally Smith from the Arcola Boy Scouts.

Pledge of Allegiance              Lion President Tom Sherman

            “America”                               Lion Secretary Don Winch

Prayer of Invocation               Lion Jerry Stout

In the interest of time and the particular occasion it was decided to dispense with the Minutes of the previous meeting and the Treasurer’s Report.

Sadness:   A moment of silence was requested by Lion President Tom upon the announcement of the death of Lion David Dilliner on Sunday, June 24.  Service arrangements are pending.

Members:  Lion President Tom informed the club that the Board of Directors accepted the resignations from the club of Lions Jeff Van Dyke (moved from the area) and Larry Chancellor.  This will also be Lion Curtis Atteberry’s last official meeting since his request to resign was accepted at the last meeting.

Special presentations:  Lion President Tom presented a monetary gift to the club’s meal preparer for this past year, Elizabeth Smothers, who prepared and served extremely creative and tasty meals.  Also, a check was presented by the Lion President to Lion Marvelle Cole who received it on behalf of the Arcola Senior Citizens for the free use of the Senior Center this year.  Their generosity is most appreciated.

The gratuity to each was one-hundred dollars ($100.00).

Scouts:  Arcola Scout Leader Wally Smith gave a presentation on the status of the Scouts at the present time.  After an 80+ year history in Arcola with the Lions Club issuing a new charter in 1949, the Scouts have seen many successes and seen Scouts go on in life to do amazing things.  Membership is currently down, not an uncommon trend in scouting, but on the bright side, there are eight new Cub Scouts in Arcola making a charter renewal necessary.  This will be enacted by the new Lions President.

Guest Speaker:  Luci Englum spoke about the St. Jude Children’s Hospital Cancer Run and its history.  Luci is a radio station manager and staunch supporter and participant in these runs.  Following her talk, Lion President Tom promised her a check from the Arcola Lions for one-hundred dollars ($100.00) in support of this year’s Run.  To date, somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.5 million dollars has been raised for St. Jude from these runs.

Installation of Officers:  Zone 4 Chairman, Lion Mark Krutsinger, installed the Arcola Lions Club officers for 2018-19.  He creatively used humor and history to introduce each office to be filled.  Humor came as only Mark can invent it, and the history came in the form of certain brands and types of candy with a hidden message about the purpose of each office.  The new officers are:

            Lion Tamer                                         Lion Dean Cole

            Tail Twister                                        Lion Dianne Murphy

            Membership Chairman                       Lion Doug Beachy

1 Year Directors                                 Lions Jerry Stout & Dean Cole

2 Year Directors                                 Lions Billy Murphy & Kenneth Reveal

First Vice President                            Lion Jeff Stout            (not present)

Second Vice President                        Lion Marvelle Cole

            Secretary                                             Lion Don Winch

            President                                             Lion Waldo Perez-Lopez

Immediate Past President       Lion Tom Sherman

Past President Recognition:  Lion Secretary Don presented Lion Past President Tom Sherman with a “Past President” patch for his vest and the traditional engraved Lion statuette in recognition for his service as the club’s 71st President with no repeat presidents.

Lion of the Year:  The Lion Secretary presented the Lion of the Year plaque to the Club’s Past President, Lion Tom Sherman.  In a year of extreme challenges and significant changes, Lion President Tom led the club with not only his own dedicated participation in club projects and services but with his own particular brand of preparedness and organization that kept leading the club ahead in completion of its activities.  He did this is addition to his own demanding schedule as Financial Superintendent for the Mattoon School District and his schedule of occasional Sunday preaching in various churches.  Lion Tom was most effective as the Arcola Lions Club’s 71st President.

New President:  Newly installed Arcola Lions Club President Waldo Perez assumed control of the gavel and reminded those present of the Family Picnic which is scheduled for Monday evening, August 27, 2018 at the old park at 6:30 p.m.  Please bring a dish and expect to be contacted about other

FAMILY GATHERING/PICNIC

AUGUST 27, 2018

12 Lions were present plus 7 guests and the Budd family & a friend, part of which was the evening’s entertainment (total of 25 persons).

Prayer of invocation               Lion Jerry Stout

Pledge of Allegiance              led by Lion President Waldo Perez

“America”                               led by Lion Secretary Don Winch

A brief meeting preceded the evening meal.

Lion President Waldo shared the club’s receipt of a Certificate of Recognition for meeting or exceeding the goal of the Lions of Illinois Foundation for 2017-18 by sending money in excess of $3,000.00 to support the Foundation.

Lion President Waldo announced the 1-M Convention which is to be held in Champaign on October 26-28.  It is customary for clubs in the district to send some-thing to be sold at a silent auction to raise funds for the Lions of Illinois Foundation.  Lion President Waldo requested donations of items to be included in the basket.

The Lion President also relayed a challenge from District Governor Lion Darren VanDuyn to members from each zone (Arcola is in Zone 4) to bring in new members by September 30, 2018.  The zone with the greatest increase of members will be honored at the District Convention Banquet on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018.  Clubs are asked to bring new members to the Convention Banquet to be inducted as new Lions, presumably by the District Governor.

The evening’s entertainment was generously and most aptly provided by Edie and Ilusha Budd, talented children of the Reverend Brent and Alena Budd.  Illusha shared some of his original compositions on the piano while Eadie shared several selections, including “The Entertainer” on the piano.  As a finale, Eadie on piano and Ilusia on guitar played and sang some familiar hymns.  It was a truly joyous sharing of talent and faith.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS/ MEETING MINUTES

09/10/18

Present:  Lion President Waldo Perez, Lion Secretary Don Winch, Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy, and Lions Billy Jo Murphy, Kenneth Reveal, Dean Cole, Marvelle Cole, Tom Sherman, and Russ Madlem.

Because the attendance between the meeting of the Board of Directors and the regular meeting of the Arcola Lions Club saw no difference in numbers or actual attendees, and since no votes were changed, there is only one set of Minutes for 09/10/18.  Ten Lions (Board members) were present for the evening.

Pledge of Allegiance              led by Lion President Waldo Perez

“America”                                           led by Lion Secretary Don Winch

Prayer of Invocation               Lion President Waldo Perez

Membership:  Lion President Waldo informed those present of requests from Lions Bill Coombe and Ron Gardner to terminate their membership in the Arcola Lions Club.

Lion Bill will resign effective September 1 in good standing, and Lion Ron will do the same as soon as his dues are paid.  A motion was received from Lion Dianne to accept the resignations, seconded, and the motion was carried.

Meals:  There was a question about the minimum number of meals that should be guaranteed paid to Elizabeth Smothers at each meeting.  The active membership now totals just twelve members.  The other eight members are either At-Large or Affiliate members.  It was the consensus of those present that twelve (12) meals should be guaranteed at each meeting @ $10.00 per meal subject to Elizabeth’s approval.  Lion Secretary Don would negotiate.  As it turned out, Elizabeth agreed.

In addition, excused absences from meetings should be communicated to the Lion Secretary no later than Friday evening to get credit for the missed meal.  Remember, meals are billed in advance.  Therefore, if you miss a meal, you will lose $10 unless you have called the Secretary by Friday evening before that meeting.

In further addition, the Secretary is to be informed of any guests that may attend a meeting that would boost attendance above 12 so that he can so inform our meal preparer.  It was suggested that the Secretary also inform the meal preparer if excused absences reduce the attendance far below 12 so that food is not wasted through over preparation.

Website:  The Arcola Lions Club website three-year subscription renewal has been paid by Webmaster Kenneth Reveal.  The cost for three years was $359.64.  A motion was made by Lion Tom Sherman to reimburse Lion Ken for the subscription @ $359.64, seconded and carried.  The website address is arcolalionsclub.org.

Low Vision Institute:  A request was received from LIF to enable one student from grades K-12 to be sponsored for low vision screening.  The Arcola Club has sponsored one student per year for several years.  The questions asked were:  Does the Arcola Schools District know about this, and has an Arcola student ever been screened?  The Lion Secretary will check this out, and the request will be tabled until the next meeting.

Spouses Nights:  After some discussion, the Board of Directors voted to hold three (3) spouses Nights in 2018-19 which shall be October 22, February 11, and June 24.  A motion was made to that effect by Lion Marvelle Cole, seconded and carried.

Convention:  The District 1-M Convention is October 26-28 at the Hawthorne Suites in Champaign, and the club is entitled to two (2) voting delegates.  Discussion ensued over the options involved regarding attendance, and Lion Secretary Don will endeavor to find out when the actual voting takes place.

Candy Days:  Lion Jerry Stout left a message requesting that the Board approve Saturday, Oct. 13 as the official collection day for this year’s Candy Day.  Hours will be either 8:00 to 2:00 or 8:00 to 12:00 depending on the numbers of Lions available since it will be harvest season.  Shifts would also be designated according to availability of help.  By consensus, the Board approved Oct. 13, 2018.

Pack-a-Sack:  The annual “Pack-a-Sack” food collection for the Arcola Food Pantry was discussed.  It was pointed out that dollar for dollar, the Food Pantry can purchase more food from Eastern Illinois Food Bank than the Arcola Lions can collect.  The “Pack-a-Sack” program is labor intensive and very time consuming.  The club’s volunteer resources are also a lot smaller than in years past.  Lion Marvelle Cole made a motion that the club make a monetary donation of $200 to the Arcola Food Pantry in October instead of doing “Pack-a-Sack”.  The motion was seconded and carried.

MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING

09/24/2018

9 Members of the Arcola Lions Club were present plus Zone 4 Chairperson Mark Krutsinger and Arthur Lion Chris.

Pledge of Allegiance              Lion First Vice President Elect Jeff Stout

                        “America”                               Lion Secretary Don Winch

Prayer of Invocation               Lion Immediate Past President Tom Sherman

Installation:  Lion Zone 4 Chairperson Mark Krutsinger officially installed Lion Jeff Stout as First Vice-President of the Arcola Lions Club.

Minutes:  Minutes from the meeting of Sept. 10, 2018 were read by the Lion Secretary, and a motion to receive them was made by Lion Tom Sherman, seconded and passed.

Treasurer:  Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy reported on the Lions Broomcorn booth.

Due to the terrible weather, attendance at the festival was down.  The income was also adversely affected.  What follows are figures known at present:

                                                            Total sales  = $6,847.74

                                                            Expenses    = $3,464.58

                                                            Sales tax     = $     68.47

Lion Dianne reported that the club would be fortunate to clear $3,000.00 this year.  Lion Tom Sherman made a motion to receive the report of the Treasurer which was seconded and passed.

Correspondence:  Luci Englum representing the St. Jude Children’s Hospital spoke to the Arcola Lions at the Installation Meeting on June 25th, and the Club offered her a donation to St. Jude’s of $100.00 for which the club received a note of heartfelt thanks.

A note of thanks was received from the Dilliner family in appreciation for the flowers provided at the funeral service for former Lion David Dilliner who died on June 24th, 2018.

The Lathrop family acknowledged their thankfulness for use of a hospital bed and other equipment for Janet who went to be with the Lord on August 29th, 2018.

Hospital:  Lion Dean Cole reported that a hospital bed and other equipment had been donated to the club by Debby Conlin.  He also reported that the Tuscola Lions Club would like to meet with members of the Arcola club to discuss developing a spirit of cooperation and getting into joint projects between the two clubs.  They want to meet at Flessors on October 4 @ 6:30 PM.  Lion Dean and three others said they would attend.

Low Vision Institute:  The Lion secretary explained this program and the opportunity to support it by sponsoring one recipient @ $290.00.  Discussion ensued, and there was concern about return on investment since only one Arcola resident, so far as is known, has received any benefit from the program since its inception in 1991.  Since the club’s membership is low, and prospective income does not seem as promising as in years past, Lion Ken Reveal made a motion to table the matter until the year’s financial outlook is assessed by the Finance Committee.  There appears to be no deadline for this program.  The motion to table was seconded and carried.

District 1-M Convention:  October 26-28 is the Convention at the Hawthorne Suites in Champaign, IL.  Voting will take place on Saturday, Oct. 27 which is when the Lion Secretary plans to attend as a delegate.  Lion President Waldo may also attend, but the club was reminded by the Zone Chairman that he cannot be a voting delegate because a voting delegate must have been a consistent member in good standing with the club for 1 yr. and 1 day to be qualified to vote.  Lion Waldo rejoined the club on February 12, 2018.  So one more voting delegate is needed, and application must be submitted by Oct. 15.  Let the Lion Secretary know (268-4458).  Cost is $32.50 for registration and lunch.

Tail Twister :  Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy is also the club Tail Twister, and Lion Dianne proposed the following:  that each active Lion member bring to each of the next four (4) meetings one choice from the following:

–       2 nonperishable canned vegetables

–       2 nonperishable canned fruits

–       2 muffin mixes

–       2 brownie mixes

–       Potatoes

–       2 stuffing mix

–       $2.00

These items will be turned over to the Salvation Army which will deliver them to the Community One Stop Christmas project for distribution on December 8.

In addition, the Tail Twister will conduct a 50/50 drawing at the second meeting in October and in November with tickets for the drawing being sold at $1.00 ea. or 6 for $5.00.  50% will go to Community One Stop Christmas.  The Tail Twister proposals were moved by Lion Marvelle Cole, seconded and passed.

District 1-M Convention:  Secretary Don reminded those present of the District 1-M Convention to be held Oct. 26-28 at the Hawthorne Suites at Wyndham but there were no more takers either as attenders or as voting delegates.  Lion Don noted that one of the items up for a vote was a recommendation to raise the District 1-M annual dues from $3.00 per year to $5.00 per year.  A motion was made by Lion Tom Sherman to have Delegate Don Winch vote “NO” on that item.  The motion was seconded and carried, and Lion Secretary Don will follow the recommendation of the Arcola membership.

MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING

12-03-2018

Present:  Lions 2nd Vice President Marvelle Cole, Treasurer Dianne Murphy, Secretary Don Winch, Membership Chairperson Doug Beachy, and Director Dean Cole were present. Let it be known that this special meeting was called to be held at Yoder’s Restaurant in Arthur following an already scheduled meeting of Zone 4 clubs.  Other board members for the Arcola Lions Club, Immediate Past President Tom Sherman, President Waldo Perez, Director Ken Reveal, and Director Jerry Stout were notified about the meeting and told of the issues involved either by email or in person. Supportive responses from three of these were received.

Lion Secretary Don shared a letter from Lion President Waldo Perez requesting acceptance of his resignation from the office of President as of December 31, 2018 along with a shift in membership status from Active to Affiliate member.  His reason is a major change in his work schedule with Master Brand in Arthur, thus making it impossible for him to be present at Lions meetings.  How-ever, Lion Waldo does want to remain as active as possible through an affiliate membership.  A motion was put forward by Lion Dianne Murphy to accept Lion Waldo’s resignation from the presidency and to grant the status of Affiliate membership.  The motion was seconded by Lion Marvelle Cole and passed.  Circumstances now warrant the moving up of Lion Marvelle Cole from 2nd Vice President to President as of January 1, 2019.

The Lion Secretary received a request to resign from the Arcola Lions Club from Lion First Vice President Jeff Stout, effective immediately.  A motion was put forward from Lion Dianne Murphy to accept Lion Jeff’s request.  The motion was seconded by Lion Dean Cole and passed.

Lion Secretary Don sent letters to Affiliate member Ron McConnell and Member at Large William Nacke informing them that they were in arrears with their dues for 2018-19.  They were given until December 10, 2018 to respond.  A motion was put forth by Lion Marvelle Cole that “no response” was to result in immediate dismissal from the club, and a response to resign would be accepted.  The motion was seconded by Lion Doug Beachy and passed.

The Lion Secretary was instructed to contact At-Large-Members Diane and John Hove (who are currently confronted with very special circumstances) to remind them of their dues which remain due.

Pledge of Allegiance  led by Lion Immediate Past President Tom Sherman

“America” led by Lion Jerry Stout

Prayer of Invocation               given by Lion Secretary Don Winch

Lion President Marvelle Cole introduced her guests for the evening, Joe and Julie Beres.

While waiting for the evening meal to be set up by Elizabeth Smothers, Lion Secretary Don explained the Foundation’s Sight & Sound Sweepstakes raffle ticket process, and tickets are now available to those wanting to participate in this Lions of Illinois fund-raiser.  There are actually three drawings this year in addition to the big drawing on May 19 at the State Convention in Springfield.  All tickets and money (checks made out to Lions of Illinois Foundation) are due to the club secretary by April 29, 2019.  To be a part of the Early Bird drawings, tickets must be turned in to the secretary by February 25, March 25, and April 22 to be placed in the pot for the March 6, April 3, and May 1 Early Bird drawings.

–       Books of 3 tickets are $10.00.  Individual tickets sell for $4.00.

–       Do not separate booklet covers from ticket stubs.

–       Be sure to fill in complete information on stubs including the sellers information on the back of each stub.  Seller information is important particularly if selling ten or more booklets making the seller eligible for a special reward.  A Lion or Lioness selling a winning ticket will also be a winner provided the information on the back of the stub is completed.

There were no Minutes from the December 10th meeting as it was the family Christmas party.  Likewise, there was no Treasurer’s report available due to the Treasurers being away.  Minutes of November 26, 2018 were read by the Secretary.

Following a fine meal, the Low Vision Institute Screening donation of $290.00 was revisited, and once again it was tabled as suggested by Lion Tom Sherman in order that financial obligations of the club for the remainder of the year could be assessed.

In the spirit of that assessment, Girls State and Boys State were discussed, but Lion Ken Reveal reported that as a representative of the American Legion/VFW, he could determine that the need for such sponsorships was not needed at this time.

The Arcola High School Senior Scholarship was brought to the attention of those present.  This is an annual award presented by the Arcola Lions Club, and once again, a motion was presented to award $500 to one graduating senior.  The motion was made by Lion Ken Reveal, seconded and carried.  This will be awarded in May.

A request was received from the Post Prom Committee of Arcola High School for a donation.  As with the Low Vision Institute request, this too was tabled pending budget perusal at the suggestion of Lion Ken Reveal.

Lion President Marvelle Cole reported that Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy succeeded in passing the Youth Protection Test given by the Boy Scout Council on her way to becoming the Charter Organization (Arcola Lions Club) representative liason between the Arcola Lions Club and the Boy Scouts of America Council on behalf of the Arcola Boy Scout Organization.  Lion Murphy will represent the club on council and district levels.  She was elected representative at the meeting of November 26, 2018.

Lion Jerry Stout read a thank you note from the Lions of Illinois Foundation for the Arcola Lions Club’s successful participation in the annual Candy Day campaign.

Lion President Marvelle put out a request for one or two other Lions to work with her on  an officer nominating committee for next year’s Lions Club officers. The Board of Directors will vote to approve the slate of officers at the March 11 meeting.

Lion Dean Cole gave the Hospital Equipment Committee Report.  He reported that room is at a premium at the Lions shed, and he offered the suggestion that the cooker be donated to the Recreation Dept. or to a local school group.  Lion Ken Reveal made a motion to donate the cooker, and Lion Jerry Stout offered to check with the school.

The motion was seconded and carried.  The Hospital Equipment Fund seems to be holding its own with several people making donations monetarily and equipment wise.

JANUARY 28, 2019

Pledge of Allegiance              led by Lion Jerry Stout

“America” led by Lion Don Winch

Prayer of Invocation               presented by Lion Tom Sherman

7 members were present plus guests DG Darren VanDuyn and his mother, Zone Chairman Mark Krutsinger, and new inductees Julie and Joseph Beres.

Following a wonderful meal prepared by Elizabeth smothers, the Minutes from the meeting of January 14 were read and approved with a motion from Lion Jerry Stout which was seconded and carried.

Lion President Marvelle introduced DG Darren VanDuyn who spoke about his goals for District 1-M which include ending the current year on June 30 with at least a +1 increase in District membership.  The District Governor offered Face Book as a possible way to get the word out about individual clubs and Lionism in general.

DG Darren presented a Key Award from International to Lion Dean Cole for his work in introducing the idea of Lionism to at least two new individuals and in so doing, bringing them into the club.

DG Darren presented a special Chevron to Lion Ken Reveal for his 35 years of service to the community of Arcola through Lionism.

DG Darren VanDuyn inducted two new members into the Arcola Lions Club, Joseph and Julie Beres.  This couple was sponsored by Lion President Marvelle Cole.

Lion President Marvelle introduced Lion Zone Chairman Mark Krutsinger from the Arthur Lions Club. Lion Mark challenged the Arcola club to approach our individual contacts with two questions:  “Do you like to have fun?” and “Do you like to help others?”  Then, assuming a positive response, Invite them to a meeting.

This was followed by a request from Lion Mark to have the Arcola Lions Club host a Zone 4 meeting on March 25th.  It was agreed that the club would host a zone meeting following the club’s regular 6:30 meeting.  Zone 4 clubs would gather at the Arcola Center at around 7:30.  Coffee would be made available.

The formation of an officer nominating committee was revisited by Lion President Marvelle, and Lions Tom Sherman and Jerry Stout volunteered.  A new slate of officers for 2019-20 is to be made available to the Board of Directors for approval by March 11.

Lion President Marvelle offered an idea communicated by Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy to do a Public Relations Dinner in June in the big room of the Arcola Center.  The purpose would be to pass out information about the club and offer various forms of entertainment, perhaps a drawing for a couple of prizes.  A nominal fee could be charged for the meal.  This will be discussed further at future meetings.

Lion Jerry Stout did find who the contact person is for the school sports boosters, and he will check with that person to see if the boosters might be interested in the Lions Club cooker.  The club is trying to make additional room for the club’s hospital equipment.  Lion Dean Cole followed with a hospital equipment report. A motion was made by Lion Immediate Past President Tom Sherman to adjourn the meeting at 8:15. The motion was seconded and carried.  Congratulations to the club’s newest members, Julie and Joe Beres.  Glad to have you aboard!

10 members present.

Pledge of Allegiance    Lion Immediate Past President Tom Sherman

        “America”                     Lion Jerry Stout

        Invocation                    Lion Secretary Don Winch

Minutes:  There being no Minutes from the February 11 meeting as it was a Spouses Night celebrating Valentines Day, the Secretary read Minutes from the meeting of January 28th.  Those Minutes were received by a motion from Lion Jerry Stout which was seconded and carried.

Retinal Screening:  In an attempt to coordinate the early summer LIF retinal screening with a local event, the Secretary contacted the Douglas County Health Department.  The event coordinator was open to possibly doing something with the Arcola Lions in late August or early September, perhaps in conjunction with a senior citizen health fair at the Arcola Center.  It was also suggested by Lion President Marvelle that perhaps the coordinated effort might include the Senior Group’s luncheon on the 3rd Friday of each month.  The Lion Secretary will check with the city as to open dates for the Arcola Center and also with Douglas County Health for their openness to Friday, Aug. 16 or Friday, September 20.  Any other possibilities will depend on schedules with the vision bus and the Douglas County Health Dept.  According to Trish Fisher in Sycamore, as of Feb. 25, there was nothing scheduled for the bus in late August. Lion Jerry Stout made a motion to have Lion Secretary Don pursue the matter.

Low Vision Screening:  The Low Vision Screening was revisited with the possibility of sponsoring a student @ $290.00.  It was tabled once more awaiting  a budget assessment for the remainder of the year.

Camp Lion sponsorship:  Lion President Marvelle indicated that a student was interested in attending Camp Lion this summer, but since the camp’s location has changed to Dixon, IL, she needs to recheck with the family.

Camp New Hope:  Lion President Marvelle Cole informed the club that Cindy Davis, an adult, would be interested in attending Camp New Hope this summer.  The cost would be $610.00.  Lion Tom Sherman made a motion to have the club do the sponsorship.  It was seconded and carried.

Post Prom:  The Post Prom request was revisited and tabled once more awaiting budget assessment.

Lions Club cooker:  Plans for donating the Lions Club cooker have fallen through so other interested parties will be sought.

Insurance:  Lion President Marvelle Cole reported that the club’s insurance premium on the Scout cabin and the Lions shed was received and paid in the amount of $1,072.00.  In addition, a rider was presented for the club’s consideration to insure against the collapse of any mine sinkholes.  The rider was rejected by consensus.

Zone 4 meeting:  Lion President Marvelle reminded the club that the Arcola Lions committed to hosting a Zone 4 meeting on Monday, March 25th at 7:30.  All that has to be prepared for this is coffee.  The Arcola Lions will hold their regular meeting at 6:30 just ahead of the Zone meeting.

Officer Slate:  The Nominating Committee has met, and it would appear that all is in readiness for the Board of Directors to approve the slate of officers for 2019-20 at the March 11 meeting.  That will also be the first reading of the slate  to the club membership.

Hospital equipment:  Lion Dean Cole reported a lack of wheelchair availability.  Also, a worn recliner was given away.  In Home Medical also donated 1½ dozen new crutches.

Museum donation:  Lion Ken Reveal has been hard at work collecting items and researching archives for history relating to the Arcola Lions Club for possible display at the new “A Walk through Time” museum on Main St. in Arcola.  What gets accepted is up to the museum Board of Directors, but Lion Ken had quite a variety of items including pins, a set of crutches, documentation, photographs, certificates, and charter materials.  Great work, Lion Ken.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

03-11-19

Present:  Lion President Marvelle Cole, Lion Secretary Don Winch, and Lions Dean Cole, Doug Beachy, Jerry Stout, Ken Reveal, and Tom Sherman.

Due to Lion Waldo Perez’s resignation from the presidency at the end of 2018 and Lion 2nd Vice-President Marvelle’s moving up to the presidency on January 1, 2019 (there was no 1st Vice-President), there is no Immediate Past President position since Lion Marvelle will be continuing as President.

Lion Tom Sherman made a motion to close the nominations and approve the slate of officers for 2019-20 as presented.  The motion was seconded and carried.

Since those present as a Board constitute 54% of the total active membership and are the only ones present for this evening’s meeting, this also shall constitute the first of the required three readings of the slate of officers.

Arcola Scholarship Committee:  A motion was presented by Lion Secretary Don to have the President appoint a Scholarship Committee whose duty it shall be to select a recipient from Arcola High School to receive the Arcola Lions Club Scholarship of $500.00.  Lions Doug Beachy and Ken Reveal were named, seconded and appointed to the Committee to serve with Lion President Marvelle Cole.

Due to Lion Waldo Perez’s resignation from the presidency necessitated by an employment conflict at the end of 2018 and Lion 2nd Vice President Marvelle Cole’s moving up to the presidency on January 1, 2019, there is no Immediate Past President position since Lion Marvelle will be continuing as President.

Sight & Sound Sweepstakes:  Since everyone seems to have participated in the Lions of Illinois Sight & Sound Sweepstakes who desires to do so, the Lion Secretary issued a final call.  Hearing no further interest, the final bits of paperwork and remaining sold and unsold tickets and money will be turned in to the Lions of Illinois Foundation, thus concluding the Arcola Club’s participation in the Sweepstakes.

Senior Scholarship:  Lion Ken Reveal reported that 11 applications for the Arcola Lions Club scholarship have been received and reviewed by Lion Ken and turned over to Lion Doug Beachy for his perusal.

Hospital Equipment:  Lion President Marvelle reported receiving a note of gratitude from Linda Lock for hospital equipment loaned to her mother who has passed away.

Promotional event:  Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy proposed holding a pork chop dinner or other food event for purposes of informing the public about Lionism, most specifically what the local Lions Club does locally and what Lions International does around the world.  Tickets would be sold for purposes of getting an approximate head count for how much food to prepare.  There are printed materials that could be utilized, or a possible guest speaker could be brought in to talk about Lionism.  There is also the possibility of tying this activity in with some other function that may be happening. This will be discussed further at future meetings.   A motion to adjourn was made by Lion Ken Reveal, seconded and carried.  The Arcola Club adjourned to a scheduled meeting of District 1-M, Zone 4 which turned out to be Zone Chairman Mark Krutsinger’s swan song as his term of office comes to an end.

Due to Lion Waldo Perez’s resignation from the presidency necessitated by an employment conflict at the end of 2018 and Lion 2nd Vice President Marvelle Cole’s moving up to the presidency on January 1, 2019, there would be no Immediate Past President position since Lion Marvelle would be continuing as President.

The Lion President called for a motion to approve the slate of nominees which was offered by Lion Dianne Murphy, seconded, and carried.

State Convention:  Lion President Marvelle Cole called for volunteers to be attenders and voting delegates to the State Convention in Springfield the weekend of May 17, 2019.  The club is entitled to two voting delegates, but there was no show of interest.

Senior Scholarship:  Lion Ken Reveal and Lion Doug Beachy had received 11 applications for the Arcola Lions Club Senior Scholarship and have turned the chosen recipient whose name has been submitted to Arcola High School.  Lion President Marvelle will make the official presentation at Honors Night at the High School on May 7.

Walk Through Time Museum:  Lion Ken Reveal reported that photographs and other memorabilia have been put on permanent display at the new museum on Main St.  Other photographs are available in the archives of the Arcola Public Library.

Camp Lions:  Lion Marvelle Cole reported that there is an interested party for this summer’s Camp Lion program.  The Arcola Lions will sponsor Anna Gauna once again at a cost of $525.00.  The motion was made by Lion Ken Reveal, seconded and carried.

Camp New Hope:  As reported previously, Cindy Davis will be sponsored by the Arcola Lions Club to attend Camp New Hope this summer of 2019.

Finance Report:  Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy gave a verbal report on the club’s finances as follows:     Activity Fund               $1,427.58

                                   Candy Days                 $   654.87

                                   Hospital Equipment        $5,018.39

                                   Meals & Dues              $   914.49

                                   Tail Twister Fund         $   408.92

                                   Total                           $8,424.25

Low Vision Screening:  Due to budget constraints, the opportunity to sponsor a low vision screening student this year will be put off.  The motion to not approve the sponsorship in 2019 was made by Lion Ken Reveal, seconded and carried.

Post Prom request:  Having been tabled several times, a request from the Arcola High School Prom Committee for a donation to the Post Prom festivities was denied  due to budget constraints, by a motion from Lion Ken Reveal.  The motion was seconded and carried.

Lion of the Year Award:  Lion President Marvelle initiated discussion as to whether the “Lion of the Year” award should be offered every other year due to reduced membership, dropped altogether, or continued as an annual tradition.  Feeling was strong to continue the tradition annually which prompted a motion to do so by Lion Bill Murphy which was seconded and carried.  Ballots will be cast at the April 22 meeting.  The presentation will be made at the Installation meeting on June 24.

Donation request:  A letter of request was received from a young man in the community to attend the Leadership Initiatives’ Advanced Law and Trial Summit program at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.  The cost is $2,500.00 plus airfare and expenses.  After discussion, it was decided that after already turning down other requests which fall more under the club’s mission objectives, it would be difficult to justify support for this effort, noteworthy as it may be.  Lion Joe Beres made a motion not to support the request.  The motion was seconded and carried.

Knight’s Quest Gala:  Lion President Marvelle shared notice from the Lions of Illinois Foundation of “A Knight’s Quest Foundation Gala” to be held at the Lisle-Naperville Hilton on Friday, September 27, 2019.  Financial advertisement support was being sought. There was no interest exhibited.

Melvin Jones request:  A request was received to make a supportive donation toward the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for a member of our Lions District.  Again, due to budget constraints, it was the consensus of the club not to support this endeavor.

Promotional dinner:  Discussion of a promotional dinner for and by the Arcola Lions Club sometime this summer at the Arcola Center was continued from the last meeting, but enthusiasm was lukewarm at best.  Turnouts for such things by other groups have not been as hoped for, and while not intended as a fund raiser, the result, namely greater understanding of the mission of Lionism, for the energy and expense expended, stands to be less than worthwhile.  Publicity articles in local publications and possible information offered at the upcoming Health Fair at the Arcola Center in September could just as well accomplish the same purpose.  Lion Ken Reveal made a motion to abandon the project for now.  The motion was seconded and carried.Broomcorn leader(s):  Lion President Marvelle Cole reported that there was no chairperson to lead this years’ organization of the Lions Club’s Broomcorn booth.  After some discussion, suggestions pointed toward Lion Dianne Murphy  (notably from the direction of  Lion Bill M.).  Lion President Marvelle agreed to share the duties and appointed herself and Lion Dianne as co-chairpersons of the Broomcorn booth

Lion of the Year:  With a few Lions missing, it was suggested that nominations for “Lion of the Year” be put off until the next meeting.  Lion Jerry Stout made the motion which was seconded and carried.

Arcola Scholarship:  A $500 Lions Club scholarship will be awarded to an
Arcola High School senior on May 7 by President Marvelle Cole.  While the recipient of the award is currently known only to the committee and the Lion President, the criteria for selection was discussed and will be studied further.

Scout cabin:  Lion President Marvelle expressed concern about the condition of the interior of the scout cabin, particularly the restrooms and general cleanliness.  The question of responsibility was raised, and several thought it fell to a combined effort between the scouts, scout leaders, and the Lions Club members.

Request for glasses:  Lion Don Winch received another request for eyeglasses from a longtime, local resident of Arcola.  His suggestion was to grant the request up to $150.00, and a motion to that effect was made by Lion Dianne Murphy.  The motion was seconded and carried.  Lion Don will follow through.

Memorial Day meeting:  In 2018 the second meeting of the month of May fell on Memorial Day and was cancelled.  The same situation is coming up this year.  Since no one present had objections, it was decided by consensus to go ahead and have the second bi-monthly meeting on Memorial Day this year.

Birdies for Charity:  Lion President Marvelle announced the annual Birdies for Charity Golf Classic which benefits the Lions of Illinois Endowment Fund.  Application forms are available from the Lion Secretary.  Simply make a one-time flat donation OR pledge one cent or more per birdie (one stroke under par).  After the tournament which runs from July 8-14, 2019, Lions will be mailed a notice of their pledge amounts due.  To give Lions an idea of the donations that could accumulate, there were 2,355 birdies scored in 2018, 1,918 scored in 2017, and 1,982 scored in 2016.  Multiply those by what you might consider pledging and that will be what you owe if you make a pledge per birdie.  Thus the choice between a one-time donation and a per birdie pledge.

Arcola Senior Class Scholarship:  Lion President Marvelle Cole presented a letter to Arcola High School senior Shelby Shaffer awarding her the $500 Arcola Lions Club Scholarship for 2019 at the Senior Awards Night on May 7.  Shelby is planning to attend Parkland College in Champaign.

Broom Corn Festival:  The Arcola Broom Corn Festival scheduled for Sept. 6-8 is really an all hands on deck fundraiser this year for the Arcola Lions Club due to the club’s reduced membership.  Lion President Marvelle reminded the group that if we cannot successfully do this event, it will be mandatory to come up with another fund raiser because the Broom Corn food booth is the club’s major fundraiser for the year.  In all likelihood, set up will take place on Wednesday evening, Sept. 4.  Again, ALL HANDS ON DECK!

Most of those in attendance at this meeting adjourned to Shay’s Restaurant for the evening meal, courtesy of the club treasury.  Those who were unable to go to Shay’s will receive a $10.00 credit for meals on the 2019-20 First Quarter billing.

Scout Cabin repairs:  Lion Dianne Murphy gave a report on Lion Kevin Huckstep’s estimate for doing repairs at the Scout Cabin which includes adding 4 Exit lights, 4 smoke/CO detectors, replacing 9 light fixtures with LED fixtures, and adding a dusk to dawn outside light at the front entrance at a cost of $2,995.00 for materials and labor with 10% to be taken off if Kevin does the work.  The offer is good for 30 days from August 19, 2019.

Lion Tom Sherman made a motion to have Lion Kevin Huckstep make the listed repairs @ $2,995.00 less 10%.  The motion was seconded and carried.  Lion Dean Cole added that someone needs to be called to service the furnace at the cabin which has been neglected for several seasons.  Lion Dean will contact  Lion Kevin that his bid has been approved.

District Governor:   District Governor David Johnson from the Mt. REGULAR MEETING MINUTES 09/23/2019

Nine members of the Arcola Lions Club met at the Arcola Senior Center along with guests Steve and Barbara Edwards and DG David Johnson.

Pledge of Allegiance            Lion Dean Cole

America                            Lion President Marvelle Cole

Invocation                            Lion Tom Sherman

Minutes:  Minutes from the meeting of Sept. 9, 2019 were read by the Lion Secretary.  Corrections:  Total income from Broom Corn should read $9,140.00, and the tip jar was prominently placed all three days of the festival.  Lion Dianne Murphy move to approve corrected Minutes which was seconded and passed.

Scout thank you:  A picture of Arcola Cub Scout Pack 96 was received along with a note of thanks from Laura Robey, Cubmaster, for the support of the Arcola Lions Club and for the opportunity to share the prime spot with the Lions at Broom Corn.

Eyeglass Report:  Lion Secretary and Eyeglass Committee Chairperson Don Winch gave an update on eyeglass aid going back to 2008/2009 that saw 3 individuals receive help with eyeglasses.  2009/2010 = 1 person; 2010/2011 = 0;

2011/2012 = 2 persons; 2012/2013 = 1 person; 2013/2014 = 2 persons;

2014 2017 = 0 persons; 2017/2018 = 2 persons; 2018/2019 = 3 persons; and 1 person has received eyeglass aid in the current year (2019/2020).

Melvin Jones Fellowship clarification:  Lion Secretary Don contacted PDG and Lions Clubs International Foundation ALERT team member Kevin Mendenhall about the confusion concerning donations to LCIF and Lions of Illinois Foundation (LIF).  Only donations made to LCIF count toward the $1000 fee to sponsor a Melvin Jones Fellow.  However, donations to LIF can count toward the LIF Foundation Fellowship which needs to be research.  PDG Kevin offered further information about LCIF stating that all money donated to LCIF (including money donated toward the $1000 fee for the MJ Fellowship) can be used for disaster relief.  $100,000.00 was immediately sent to Florida following Hurricane Dorian; not to any government entity, but to an International Director in the area.  All donated funds are handled by Lions, not any government entity.  In addition, any District Governor with more than 100 members in his or her district can apply for aid in $10,000.00 increments.  PDG Kevin has a goal in which  every club in District 1-M is asked to donate $175.00 to LCIF to be used for disaster relief.  Each clubs donation would, of course, be credited toward the $1000 for a Melvin Jones Fellowship.

New members inducted:  District Governor David Johnson from the Mt. Zion club inducted new members Barbara and Stephen Edwards into the Arcola Lions Club.  Lions Barbara and Stephen were sponsored by Lion Bill Murphy.

Congratulations to them both.

Broom Corn Festival booth:  Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy gave an updated report on income and expenses for the food booth at the 49th annual Broom Corn Festival as follows:    $9,140.00 gross sales total

                                          $   297.95  tip jar

                                          $9,437.95 grand total income

                                      –   $   515.00 paid to Chamber for booth fee

                                      –   $4,008.78 expenses not including sales tax

$4,914.17 net profit less remaining sales tax

Candy Days:  The annual Candy Days collection at the four-way stop in Arcola will take place on Saturday, October 12 with shifts running from 8:00 11:00 and 11:00 2:00.  Lion Chairperson Jerry Stout informed the Lion Secretary prior to the meeting that shifts have been filled.

DG Cabinet Meeting:  Lion President Marvelle Cole announced that a District Governors 1-M Cabinet Meeting will be held at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Education Wing in the back of the hospital on Sunday, October 6 at 2:00.  All Lions are invited, and all club officers, particularly presidents and secretaries, are encouraged to be present.

District 1-M Convention:  Lion President Marvelle also reminded Arcola Lions that the District 1-M Convention is to be held at the Unique Suites in Charleston on November 8 & 9 with voting on new District officers and two amendments to the Constitution/Bylaws .  Two voting delegates are allotted to the Arcola Lions Club, and Lion Secretary Don has agreed to attend.  Lion President Marvelle also agreed to go as a voting delegate.  Lion Dianne Murphy will be putting together a basket to be auctioned off as a fund raiser for LIF.

Membership issues:  Due to serious health concerns, Lions Joe and Julie Beres have requested to drop their membership for the present time.

Another Lion continues to battle health issues.  The Arcola Lions Club Board of Directors is making the recommendation that this Lion be given the option via letter to either suspend his membership until such time that he can once again take active part in the functions of the club or pay the dues included in the accompanying bill as an affiliate member.  A decision must be received by the Lion Secretary no later than October 14, 2019.

Yet another Lion, an affiliate member, has yet to pay dues as billed in August, 2019 nor has this Lion participated at all in any activities of the club.  The Board of Directors recommends that this Lions membership be suspended unless said Lion pays the required dues of $73.00 no later than October 14, 2019.  Failure to do so will result in suspension from membership in the Arcola Lions Club.

The above recommendations were made into a motion brought by Lion Tom Sherman and seconded and carried.  It is understood that when the way becomes clear for any of these individuals, their membership can be reinstated without penalty or cost other than the normal charges for dues and meals.

Scout cabin improvements:  Lion Dianne Murphy voiced a need for a large entryway rug for the front entrance to the scout cabin.  Lion Tom Sherman made a motion to give Lion Dianne the authority to shop for and purchase such a rug at a cost of no more than two-hundred dollars ($200.00).  The motion was seconded and passed.

Lion Dean Cole informed the membership that Lion Kevin Huckstep was contacted and told that his agreement to make repairs and improvements to the scout cabin at a cost of $2,995.00 (less 10%) was approved.  Lion Kevin will do the work over the winter months and requests some help from club members.

Lion Dean will also look into getting the furnace serviced.

One Stop Community Christmas:  Lion President Marvelle announced that One Stop Community Christmas will take place once again at Lake Land College on December 14 starting at 8:00 a.m.  Volunteers are needed all day  and also on Friday evening, Dec. 13 for setup.  All volunteers are required to go through an online registration process prior to the event.  Lions Marvelle and Dianne Murphy proceeded to describe the event for the benefit of the new members.

Hospital equipment concerns:  Lion Dean Cole reported that three electric wheel chairs are in need of repair, and AAA Mobility in Effingham is qualified to do the work.  Apparently the repairs will require more than battery replacements.  Cost estimates for two of the chairs are $378 and nearly $500.  The third chair is still being evaluated.  In addition there are three more chairs in the Lions shed that need evaluation.  It is important to get these chairs in operating condition because, according to Lion Dean, there are armed service veterans in the area who need them.  A motion was made by Lion Ken Reveal to authorize Lion Dean to go ahead and have the repairs completed by AAA Mobility to the chairs already in Effingham.  The motion was seconded and carried.

Lion Dean lamented the lack of space in the Lions Shed, and he plans to do some clearing and rearranging on Tuesday morning, Sept. 24, and he asked for help.

Lion Barbara Edwards made a motion that the other three electric wheel chairs be taken to Effingham as well and evaluated.  The motion was seconded and carried.

Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy noted that Lion Dean puts a lot of miles on his vehicles and incurs no small expense for gasoline for which he is not getting any reimbursement.  Lion Dianne made the motion that Lion Dean be reimbursed on a monthly basis for fuel at the federal rate.  Lion Dean will submit a written request at the end of each month.  The motion was seconded and carried.

Lion Steve Edwards made a motion that Lion Dean be given the authority to discard by whatever means possible any hospital equipment in the Lions shed that is either no longer usable or no longer in demand since space for storage is becoming a critical issue.  The motion was seconded and carried.

MINUTES FOR SPOUSES’ NIGHT

Pledge of Allegiance            led by Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy

“America”                             led by Lion Jerry Stout

Prayer of invocation             offered by Lion Secretary Don Winch

Guest speakers:  Lion President Marvelle Cole introduced Aaron Boothe, Youth Pastor at Walnut Grove Christian Church, and church member and Arcola High School Senior Jacob Butler as the guest speakers for the evening.  Jacob told the group assembled about S.W.A.T., a long standing Christian group at the Arcola High School which meets over the lunch period on Tuesdays.  They pray, have a brief Bible study, and share individual testimonies.  The group consistently numbers between 30 and 50 students.  S.W.A.T. stands for “Students with a Testimony.”

Pastor Aaron proceeded to describe another group at the high school which is  F.C.A. (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) which meets at 7:00 a.m. on Friday mornings.  There is also a Bible study group.  Aaron and other ministers in Arcola have also assembled C.O.Y.O., a youth group blending youth from at least six churches in and around Arcola which meet Sunday evenings in various churches on a rotating basis.  C.O.Y.O. participants also engage in mission trips and numerous cultural activities, concerts, etc. around the area.

Candy Days:  Lion chairperson Jerry Stout reported a record setting Candy Days from Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019.  The regular goal for most Candy Days has been $2,000.00 with that goal having been met only 8 times in all the years of Candy Days.  This year Lion Jerry reported an income of $2,200.34 from six hours of collecting at the four-way stop in Arcola.  New Lion Steve Edwards manned his post collecting from east bound traffic for the whole six hours and garnered $731.56.  The west bound post collected 788.24.  The north bound post collected $340.39, and the south bound post collected $340.15.

Convention resolutions:  Lion Secretary Don informed the assembly of the two resolutions which are to be voted on at the District 1-M Convention on November 9 in Charleston.  One has to do with a change in prerequisites for Lions to be Regional/District Zone Chairpersons (presidency of local club no longer required but simply being an officer along with being on the local club Board of Directors).  The other resolution allows newly elected District Governors to appoint Zone Chairpersons prior to taking office or within 30 days thereafter.

Hospital equipment report:  Lion Dean Cole reported that the club now has 22 hospital beds in its possession ready to loan out.  There are also several walkers of the type without wheels.  Two electric wheel chairs that were taken to Effingham for repairs have been fixed and returned at a reduced cost, and the shop that did the repairs also donated an electric wheel chair to the club.

Member issues:  The members discussed at the meeting of Sept. 23 have not responded regarding their membership, but Lion Russ Madlem did call Lion Membership Chairman Doug Beachy about this Spouses Night thus indicating a continued interest in the club.  Lion Tom Sherman made a motion to discontinue the membership of Lion Jeff Lyons which was seconded and carried.  In another motion, Lion Ken Reveal moved to table a decision on Lion Russ Madlem until the next meeting on Oct. 28 by which time hopefully his desires will be clarified.  The motion was seconded and carried.

50/50 drawing:  Lion Jerry Stout won the 50/50 drawing.  The other half of the 50/50 will go into a fund to be donated to One Stop Community Christmas. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Lion Tom Sherman, seconded and carried at 8:35 p.m.

Minutes:  Minutes from the meeting of October 14 were read by the Lion Secretary and corrections were made as follows:  Lion Steve Edwards did not collect for Candy Days a full 6 hours, but did 4 hours.  Volunteers from outside the club collected for the first 2 hours.  However, Lion Steve was recognized as the donation king.  Also, the final gross tally was @2201.04.

Membership:  The Lions Board of Directors approved Lion Russ Madlem’s request to go to an affiliate member status, his proper dues having been submitted.  The motion was made by Lion Ken Reveal, seconded and carried.

Convention:  Lion President Marvelle Cole informed the club that another obligation prevents her from attending the District 1-M Convention on Nov. 9.  She asked for someone to attend and vote in her place, but there were no takers.  Lion Secretary Don will be the only voting member from the club.

One Stop Community Christmas:  The club was informed that volunteers must register online to help at One Stop Community Christmas on Dec. 14, 2019.  At the suggestion of Lion Dianne Murphy, Lion Barbara Edwards made a motion to have the club make a donation of $200.00 to One Stop..  The motion was seconded and carried.

Scrip:  Lion President Marvelle shared information about the LIF Scrip program for purchasing Christmas gifts, etc. using scrip gift cards as a fundraiser for the Lions of Illinois Foundation.  Little interest was generated as it seems that the Intricacies of running the program outweigh the convenience.

Candy Days:  Lion Jerry filed his final report on Candy Days, 2019.  A corrected figure of $2201.04 makes up the grand total.  Subtract $190.00 for the candy and $40.00 for a thank you in the Record Herald, and the net income was $1971.04.  60% of that figure ($1182.62) will be sent to Lions of Illinois Foundation along with another $392.36 which was left over from the clubs portion of receipts last year for a total of $1574.98 sent to LIF via a motion from Lion Tom Sherman which was seconded and carried.  The club’s net portion for use as eyeglass and hearing aid funds for 2019-20 is $788.42.

Ramp request:  Lion President Marvelle informed the club that she was contacted by a lady from Tuscola who needs a ramp for her home due to knee surgery that she is having in November.  After some discussion, it was suggested that the Tuscola Lions be contacted to help with or bear the cost of such a ramp.  The estimate quoted to the Lion President by one vendor was in the area of $1375.00.  The consensus of the club was that this would appear to be a Tuscola Lions responsibility so the issue was tabled until the next meeting or until Tuscola has been contacted.

Minutes:  Minutes from the meeting of October 28, 2019 were read by the Lion Secretary (Nov. 11 meeting cancelled because of weather) and approved by a motion from Lion Ken Reveal which was seconded and carried.

Ramp:  Discussion of a prior request for help providing an access ramp for a Tuscola resident was taken up once more.   Lion President Marvelle contacted the Tuscola Lions Club who proclaimed that they could not afford a ramp.  Tuscola was informed that Arcola could not afford a ramp, but Lion President Marvelle suggested that Tuscola contact their local Rotary or Kiwanis clubs for help, and the matter involving Arcola was dropped.

A request was also received from Lion Kevin Huckstep for another ramp, but the request has not been followed up by Lion Kevin.  Lion Bill Murphy expressed concern over whether the Arcola Lions Club should even be entertaining such requests for a ramp because the issue is one of access and regress which also involves great expense due to state and county regulations in ramp construction.  Lion Bill made a motion that the Arcola Lions Club should not consider such requests in the future.  The motion was seconded and carried.

Treasurers Report:  Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy gave the following report on club finances:  Activity Fund                 $4,302.52

  • Adult Low Vision:
Lion Secretary Don read a description of the Lions of Illinois Foundation’s Low Vision program, Orientation and Mobility Training.  The cost is substantial @ $65.00 per hour of training with 10-15 hours required for completion.  The federal government no longer funds such an endeavor for adult individuals who are blind or who are losing their sight.  The program is designed to give free instruction through the Orientation and Mobility initiative for safe and effective travel through the individuals challenging environment.  The expense of the training being prohibitively expensive for the Arcola Club to bear, Lion Treasurer Dianne Murphy made a motion to reject consideration for club support.
